The tears of Marco Polo (new)
Ballet (2000), choreography by Jean-Claude Gallotta, directed by: Jean-Francois Santoni.
The creation of The tears of Marco Polo took place on Septemer 12th 2000 at the TNP in Villeurbanne during the Biennale de Danse in Lyon.
Because he followed the making of the show, its construction during the rehearsals with Jean-Claude Gallotta, Jean-Francois Santoni, the director felt and reproduced in his film, the energy, the beauty and the precision of The tears of Marco Polo, a large game played on a chessboard where the limuits are blurred.
Jean-Claude Gallotta learnt classical dancing and claquettes before starting modern dancing in 1976. After studying Fine Arts in Grenoble, his first stage was a hill outside of town. The places have a very big importance for him. In New York, he discovered Merce Cunningham and Bob Wilson's work. In 1979, Jean-Claude Gallotta founded the Emile Dubois Groupe bringing together dancers, comedians, musicians and plasticians. The band became Grenoble's National Choreography Center. Its creations have been represented worldwide and were praised by the public and the critics.
Mixing styles and genres, he wonders about the essence of his choreographical work: 'How, beyond the rumor, one thinks about what we call choreographical culture, I mean how an artistic act can be continued by men and women [...] how that passage between art and culture takes place. Art is a unique action, the things one wants to say, the visions, often against society [...] At the moment when one works on the deep relation between art and culture, one tries to find the means, the translation key to pass from one to another'. 'One must create the perfect blend between life and art, that's the ideal situation.'
Dance is an abstract product 'which allows all the inventions' and Jean-Claude Gallotta never stops inventing, 'teasing his imagination'. Marco Polo's tears must be placed in that perspective of research and related to his desire to go beyond all the existing barriers.
